Course Outline
Respiratory Awareness and Fit Testing
General information on course
There are many different hazards that arise from working where there are airborne substances and contaminants. This program has been developed in order to teach participants how to avoid exposure to respiratory hazards, and prevent acute or chronic illnesses or injury. Respiratory protection measures are put into place where conventional engineering controls cannot eliminate airborne contaminants from the work environment. Participants must successfully complete and pass both the theoretical and practical components of this course to receive their record of training (ROT).
****Participants must be clean-shaven to be able to complete the fit-testing portion of this training session**
Duration:
Can be a half day depending on the size of the group and participant interaction.
Who Should Attend:
This program has been developed for individuals who are likely to work in an environment where an airborne hazardous substance or an oxygen deficient atmosphere is present in the course of their day-to-day job activities.
COURSE COMPONENTS
THEORETICAL COMPONENT:
After successfully completing this portion of the course, participants will understand:
- The legislative requirements (Government Regulations, CSA Standards and Manufacturers’ Guidelines and Principles);
- The duties and responsibilities of workplace stakeholders;
- Air contaminants and their physical effects;
- The various types of respiratory protection;
- The selection, utilization and limitations of various respirator types;
- Protection factors as they relate to respiratory equipment;
- The proper maintenance, usage and storage of respiratory protection equipment.
PRACTICAL COMPONENT:
To successfully pass this course, participants must demonstrate the following:
- Proficiency in fit-testing respiratory equipment – Air-Purifying Respirators (APR) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA);
- Proficiency in donning and doffing respirator equipment.
By means of group discussion, case studies and one-on-one instruction, participants will gain the ability to apply what they learn in this course.
